“In de praktijk” is zo’n setje woorden dat heel makkelijk naar het Engels te vertalen is, maar waarbij die vertaling dan toch vaak niet goed voelt. De Engelse vertaling is namelijk “in practice“. Klinkt misschien raar, omdat dat “practice” in het Engels ook “oefenen” kan betekenen, maar betekent ook echt gewoon “in de praktijk”.
De reden dat het soms als vertaling niet helemaal lekker klinkt, ligt er dus niet aan dat “practice” stomtoevallig een homoniem is in het Engels (een woord met meerdere betekenissen, in dit geval dus “oefenen” en “praktijk”). Daar hebben Engelstaligen echt geen moeite mee.
Waar het hem wel aan ligt is, denk ik, dat “in practice” in het Engels wat formeler klinkt dan “in de praktijk” bij ons. Wat wetenschappelijker, misschien. Maar het is muggenziften, hoor. In 90% van de gevallen is “in practice” gewoon een prima Engelse vertaling van “in de praktijk”.
Hieronder toch nog wat andere opties, voor wie wat informeler Engels wil.
