Een makkelijke fout om te maken, het vertalen van “dat is niet aan jou” als “that is not on you”. Dit is echter een false friend; de vertaling klopt niet.
“That is not on you” betekent “dat is niet jouw schuld.” Dat is iets anders, dus.
In het Engels zeggen we “that is on you/ her/ him/ me” om aan te geven dat iets iemands schuld is.
“We were late for that party, but I was the one who started getting dressed too late. It’s not on you, it’s on me.”
(Voor mij als Brit klinkt dit trouwens vrij Amerikaans. Ik zou het zelf niet zeggen, maar het is wel erg gangbaar Engels.)
Het Nederlandse “dat is aan jou” betekent dat iets jouw keus is, of jouw verantwoordelijkheid. In het Engels zeggen ze dan “it is up to you”. Twee kleine woordjes, maar een erg groot betekenisverschil. Iets om op te letten, dus!
