Hoe zeg je “iemand aanspreken (op iets)” in het Engels?

Een vraag in mijn inbox over ‘aanspreken’, en wel in alle betekenissen! Vooral als het gaat om ‘aanspreken’ in de betekenis van ‘met iemand gaan praten’ is de vertaling enigszins lastig, omdat het Engels geen letterlijke tegenhanger heeft. Toch zijn er prima oplossingen te vinden.

Betekenis 1: leuk vinden

Deze is makkelijk, als iets je aanspreekt, in andere woorden je bent er blij mee, dan zeg je in het Engels ‘it appeals to you‘. Ook grammaticaal vergelijkbaar, want het is het ding dat je aanspreekt dat de persoonsvorm krijgt, en dat is in het Engels in dit geval ook.

De boeken spreken jongeren aan vanwege de moderne thema’s.	The books appeal to young people because of their contemporary themes. The books resonate with young people because of their contemporary themes. Young readers are drawn to the books because of their contemporary themes. Young readers like the books because of their contemporary themes.
Het nieuwe beleid spreekt veel medewerkers aan.	The new policy appeals to many employees. The new policy is popular among many employees. The new policy is well-received by many employees. Many employees are pleased with the new policy.

Betekenis 2: aanspreken op gedrag

Als je iemand aanspreekt op hun gedrag dan zeg je in het Engels over het algemeen dat ‘you are going to have a word with them‘. Andere opties staan hieronder, maar die vind ik persoonlijk wat minder sterk.

Ik vind dat gedrag echt niet kunnen. Ik ga hem zo even aanspreken.	I think that behaviour is totally out of line. I’m going to have a word with him in a minute. I think that behaviour is totally out of line. I’m going to bring it up with him in a minute. I think that behaviour is totally out of line. I’m about to speak to him about it.
Hij sprak de tiener aan op zijn gedrag.	He had a word with the teenager about his behaviour. He confronted the teenager about his behaviour. He called out the teenager on his behaviour. He spoke to the teenager about his behaviour.
Heb je last van de muziek van mijn zoon? Sorry. Ik zal hem erop aanspreken.	Is my son’s music bothering you?Sorry. I’ll have a word with him. Is my son’s music bothering you?Sorry. I’ll speak to him about it. Is my son’s music bothering you?Sorry. I’ll talk to him right away. Is my son’s music bothering you?Sorry. I’ll make sure to speak to him about it.

Betekenis 3: een (kort) gesprek beginnen

Als je iemand aanspreekt om een gesprek te beginnen dan is er echt geen directe vertaling in het Engels. ‘Approach’ (= naderen) komt het dichtste bij qua letterlijke betekenis, maar klinkt in veel gevallen raar. Daarom is ‘ask’ meestal de betere vertaling.

Ik sprak iemand aan om de weg te vragen.	I asked someone for directions. I stopped someone to ask for directions. I approached someone to ask for directions.
Hij sprak de klant aan in de winkel om hulp aan te bieden.	He asked the customer in the shop if they needed any help. He offered help to the customer in the shop. He approached the customer in the shop to offer assistance. (beetje onnatuurlijk)

Betekenis 4: adresseren

Nederlands	Engels
Je moet hem aanspreken met “meneer”.	You should address him as ‘sir’. You should call him ‘sir’
