Ik kreeg een vraag in mijn email over de Engelse vertaling van “ver te zoeken”. Goede vraag! Er zijn in principe veel vertalingen mogelijk, maar ze zijn allemaal best anders dan het Nederlands. *Far to look* is natuurlijk geen Engels, dat had je zelf ook wel bedacht, maar je kunt in het Engels ook niet iets formuleren als *it is something you have to really search for a lot* ofzo. Engelstaligen zullen dat niet op de juiste manier opvatten.
(Uitzondering is als iets NIET ver te zoeken is, dan is de vertaling wel lekker letterlijk. Zie hieronder bij betekenis 2.)
Betekenis 1: het is er helemaal niet
Dit is de normale betekenis van “ver te zoeken”. In het Engels kun je dit vertalen met “it is in short supply” of “it is nowhere to be found“. Zie de tabel.

Als iets NIET ver te zoeken is, is de vertaling naar het Engels veel makkelijker. Zie hieronder.
