Wat een mooie Nederlandse uitdrukking. Dat je zo lang naar iets kijkt, dat je uiteindelijk niets anders meer ziet. Je ziet alleen nog maar dat ene probleem, of juist dat ene positieve aspect. Zo mooi uitgedrukt, en zo wáár.
“Blindstaren” is lastig naar het Engels te vertalen, omdat het Engels geen term heeft dat zowel dat staren naar één ding als het niet meer zien van de andere dingen heeft. De meeste vertalingen hebben alleen dat eerste aspect (to get fixated, to focus on, etc). Dat dat betekent dat je de rest niet meer ziet, dat moet de toehoorder er zelf bij verzinnen.
Uitzondering is als je je blindstaart op een probleem, of een negatief aspect. Dan kun je in het Engels zeggen “to get hung up on a subject”. Dat vind ik best vergelijkbaar. Helaas kun je die uitdrukking dus alleen gebruiken als het om een onderwerp gaat waar je depressief van wordt.
“To have tunnel vision” heeft ook een vergelijkbare betekenis, maar toen ik aan het vertalen sloeg merkte ik dat deze toch vaak niet zo goed in te bouwen is, omdat het lelijke zinnen oplevert. Wil je toch graag zo dicht mogelijk bij de Nederlandse betekenis blijven, dan is “we’re developing tunnel vision when it comes to this subject” misschien zo slecht nog niet.

Deze vertalingen liever niet
Dit is er weer zo eentje waar ik online vanalles tegenkom dat niet klopt.
to be myopic – myopic betekent in letterlijke en figuurlijke zin kortzichtig. Dat je problemen niet voorziet, of geen rekening houdt met consequenties. Kan weleens een vertaling zijn, en ik heb hem dan ook hierboven genoemd, maar heeft toch een net iets andere betekenis.
To be sidelined – dit betekent dat je aan de kant wordt gezet en is geen goede Engelse vertaling voor “zich blindstaren op”
take an isolated look – ik snap de logica, maar ik denk niet dat een Engelstalige dit op de juiste manier zal opvatten. Ik zou denken dat je even alleen naar dat punt kijkt, maar ik zou er niet bij verzinnen dat dat betekent dat je de andere punten niet meer ziet.
to be theological about – uhm, nee
to be monopolised – ook hier, ik snap de logica, maar ik denk niet dat het goed begrepen wordt.
