De uitdrukking “laten we elkaar geen mietje noemen” wordt in het Nederlands soms gebruikt om vrij algemeen te zeggen “laten we eerlijk zijn”, “laten we niet om de hete brei heendraaien”, “laten we zeggen waar het op staat”. In specifieke zin is de betekenis “laten we precies zeggen hoe we over elkaar denken”. Meer iets tussen twee mensen, dus. Ik zie het echter bijna altijd met die algemenere betekenis gebruikt worden.
Het Engels heeft geen uitdrukking specifiek voor twee partijen die eerlijk tegen elkaar gaan zijn, maar dat is geen probleem, want het Engels heeft ontzettend veel uitdrukkingen om aan te geven dat je iets heel eerlijks en duidelijks gaat zeggen. Je hebt dus genoeg om uit te kiezen!

Deze betekenis vond ik in het Vlaams woordenboek voor “elkaar geen Liesbeth noemen”. Hij zit erg dicht bij de bovenstaande betekenis aan, dus ik noem hem hier ook maar even.
