Hoe zeg je “storing” in het Engels?

Het woord “storing” is lastig naar het Engels te vertalen omdat er niet één vertaling is. Per geval is de vertaling anders. Ik geef hieronder een paar veelvoorkomende gevallen.

Ik heb geen internet. Blijkbaar is er een storing.I don’t have any internet. Apparently it’s down.

I don’t have any internet. Apparently there’s an outage. (US English)
De trein is uitgevallen vanwege een storing.The train was cancelled due to a malfunction.

The train was cancelled due to a fault (UK Engels)

The train was cancelled due to an equipment failure. (=storing aan trein of elektrische leiding)

The train was cancelled due to a signal failure. (=signaalstoring)

There was a disruption in rail services. (dit is wat ze daadwerkelijk zeggen)
Er zit een storing in de telefoonlijn.There’s a fault in the telephone line (UK Engels)
Er was een storing in het radiosignaal.There was a disturbance in the radio signal.

There was an interference in the radio signal.
De storing zit in dit stuk van het netwerk.The problem is in this part of the network.

The malfunction is in this part of the network.
Storingsanalyse in het electranet.Fault analysis in the power grid.

Engelstalige storingssites

Dat het Engels niet één handig woord voor “storing” heeft, zie je ook aan de namen van Engelstalige websites die storingen monitoren. Allestoringen.nl heet in het Engels DownDetector. Hun slogan is “real-time problem & outage monitoring“. Dan hebben we de Internet Outages Map van Cisco. Brits telecombedrijf Three heeft een “Network status Checker“.

    ‘The internet is down’ is a perfectly good formal sentence. ‘Outage’ isn’t usually used in British English; it sounds American to me. In the US they say “We have a power outage”, but in the UK they say “There’s a power cut.”
    For the radio one, I’d say ‘interference’, not ‘disturbance.’
    The word ‘malfunction’ is rather literary and stiff. You’re far more likely to hear “There’s a fault on the line”, whether that’s telephones or railways. And in the UK, there’s always the immortal “The train was cancelled due to leaves on the track.”
