Iemand in de bloemetjes zetten kan in het Nederlands een aantal gerelateerde betekenissen hebben. Je wil iemand laten weten dat ze bijzonder zijn, of dat je ze dankbaar bent, door ze ofwel een cadeautje te geven, ofwel door ze publiekelijk te eren, of allebei.
Dan kan het ook nog zo zijn dat het cadeautje in kwestie letterlijk een bos bloemen is – “letterlijk in de bloemetjes zetten” wordt dan een soort grapje. Dit grapje wordt nogal vaak gemaakt in Nederlandstalig gebied 🙂
Gaat het vooral om dat publiekelijke eren, dan is een Engelse vertaling met iets als “to put someone in the spotlight” of “to honour someone” (erg formeel, wel) waarschijnlijk de beste keus.
Gaat het meer om een cadeautje, of bijvoorbeeld een uitje met een paar mensen, dan kun je iets doen als “to make someone feel special” of “to spoil someone“.
Maar zoals je aan de lengte van de tabel hieronder zult zien: er zijn heel veel opties, allemaal met een iets andere lading. Je zult de beste moeten kiezen.
Als je letterlijk een bos bloemen gaat geven moet ik je teleurstellen, een vertaling met “flowers” is er niet, waardoor je het grapje in het Engels dus niet kunt maken. In de tabel heb ik wel wat oplossingen voor je gezet.
