In het Nederlands wens je iemand “sterkte!” als ze in een moeilijke periode zitten en sterk moeten zijn om erdoorheen te komen. Je wenst ze genoeg kracht toe om de moeilijke tijd te kunnen dragen. Maar in het Engels zeggen we het niet op deze manier. “I wish you strength” kan op zich wel, en zal ook wel begrepen worden, maar het klinkt raar omdat het geen standaard uitdrukking is.
In het Engels zeggen we eerder iets als “take care“, “all the best” of “my thoughts are with you“.
Wil je heel graag het idee van iemand kracht toewensen erin houden, dan vind ik het wat Amerikaanse “wishing you strength and courage” wel mooi. Deze klinkt veel beter dan het on-Engelse *I wish you strength*.
Sterkte in nare situaties, en minder nare situaties
In het Nederlands zeggen we “sterkte” als er iets heel naars is gebeurd, zoals een overlijden, maar ook als de situatie wat minder vervelend is. Je moet met die vervelende collega samenwerken, of een presentatie geven. De vertaling is in beide gevallen in het Engels anders. Hieronder geef ik een heel aantal opties.

Fun fact: in Māori bestaat eigenlijk ook zo’n term: kia kaha. Die is de afgelopen jaren heel gangbaar geworden in Nieuw-Zeeland, ook door mensen die niet Māori zijn. Dus in een hoek van de Engelssprekende wereld is er hier toch een prima vertaling voor 😉
