Ik schreef gisteren een stukje over “propedeuse“, en toen kwam ik erachter dat de meest gebezigde Engelse vertaling voor “negatief bindend studieadvies” online als volgt luidt: *negative binding recommendation* (of, nog erger: *negative binding study advice*). Echt jongens, dat begrijpt geen kip. Tijd voor een betere optie.
Wat mij betreft is een goede vertaling iets als “binding recommendation to discontinue the current degree programme” (US Engels: program). Ja, dat is lang. Maar volgens mij kan het echt niet korter in het Engels.
Het Nuffic, de instantie die o.a. het Nederlandse onderwijssysteem uitlegt aan buitenlanders (voor vertalers die met educatie-onderwerpen te maken hebben een soort God) is het met me eens. Voor “studieadvies” geven zij “recommendation regarding a person’s educational future“.
En dat is niet eens genoeg, want ze voegen eraan toe:
Explain that the school issues a recommendation regarding the pupil’s next form of schooling. In the case of higher education, the student is told after the first year whether or not he or she should continue in the programme or switch to something else.
