In het Engels hebben we drie vertalingen voor “haalbaar”: “achievable“, “attainable” en “feasible“. (Hebben we het over “haalbaarheid”, dan wordt het dus “achievability“, “attainability” en “feasability“.) Daardoor weten Nederlandstaligen vaak niet zo goed wat ze moeten kiezen. Als vuistregel kun je aanhouden: “feasable“/ “feasability” is meestal de juiste keus, maar je kunt ook een van de andere twee kiezen.
Wat is het verschil tussen “achievable”, “attainable” en “feasible”
Het grootste verschil is dat “feasible” gewoon vaker gebruikt wordt. Het is een wat normaler woord.
In betekenis is het verschil heel subtiel. “Feasible” meer gaat om realistische haalbaarheid, terwijl “achievable” ook voor minder realistische situaties gebruikt wordt.
Staying up for 48 hours to finish that paper is achievable, but it isn’t feasible. (=48 uur wakker blijven om dat opstel af te maken is theoretisch haalbaar, maar niet praktisch haalbaar.) (Dit is wel een gekunsteld voorbeeld, hoor, maar even om het duidelijk te maken.)
“Attainable” zit dan tegen “achievable” aan, waarbij er wat meer een gevoel van een nobel streven aan hangt.
World peace must be attainable, but is it achievable? It certainly isn’t feasable! (=Vrede op aarde zou toch idealiter haalbaar moeten zijn. Maar is het in onze realiteit ook haalbaar? Praktisch haalbaar is het zeker niet!) (Ook deze is erg gekunsteld.)
Ik zeg het nog een keer: in de praktijk maakt het weinig uit welke je kiest. Ik heb dit stukje vooral geschreven voor de mensen onder ons die het graag precies willen weten.
