Het woord “terughoudend” is moeilijk naar het Engels te vertalen omdat er zovéél mogelijkheden zijn. Je moet wel de juiste vertaling kiezen, anders past je vertaling niet in de context. Hieronder heb ik een overzicht gemaakt waar ik mijn best heb gedaan om voor iedere veelvoorkomende context een voorbeeld te zetten. Staat jouw gebruik van “terughoudend” er niet tussen? Laat vooral een comment achter!
De letterlijkste vertaling is “restrained“, maar deze vertaling past helaas vaak niet.
Voor het zelfstandig naamwoord terughoudendheid hebben we “reticence“. Een prachtige vertaling, maar helaas is dit een redelijk ongebruikelijk woord in het Engels dat alleen goed begrepen wordt door Engelstaligen die vrij goed belezen zijn. Niet altijd geschikt voor gebruik, dus.
