Mijn probleem met de meeste Engelse vertalingen voor “ingeving”, is dat bij een “ingeving” de herkomst van het idee buiten jezelf ligt. Het is je ingegeven, door God, door het lot, door energiegolven in de lucht… zoiets. Daardoor klinkt het niet zo arrogant om te zeggen “ik had ineens zo’n goede ingeving”. De vertalingen klinken wél arrogant, want “a stroke of genius” of “a brilliant idea” klinken wel alsof het uit jezelf komt.
Een “epiphany” komt ook van buitenaf, maar “epiphany” is voor mij persoonlijk te religieus en hoogdravend; ik zou het nooit gebruiken om een idee van mezelf te beschrijven.
Daarom vind ik het wat informele “I had a brainwave” de beste vertaling. Klinkt toch wat minder arrogant, vind ik. Hieronder nog wat andere opties.
