Een false friend die ik vaak mis hoor gaan: als je iets “uit je hoofd” kent of leert in het Nederlands, dan is dat in het Engels NIET “out of your head”. De juiste vertaling is vaak iets met “by heart“, maar dat hoeft niet per se. Ik heb hieronder weer wat mogelijke vertalingen op een rijtje gezet.
Betekenis 1: als het om geheugen gaat

| Hij kent alle hoofdsteden uit zijn hoofd. | He can name all the capitals by heart. He has memorized all the capitals. He can recite all the capitals from memory. |
| Hij weet de weg uit zijn hoofd. | He knows the way by heart. He remembers the way exactly. |
| Weet jij zo uit je hoofd hoeveel dozen we nog nodig hebben? | Do you know off the top of your head how many boxes we still need? Do you know offhand how many boxes we still need? Can you remember how many boxes we still need? Do you know how many boxes we still need, or do you have to check, first? |
Betekenis 2: gedachtes loslaten
In deze betekenis kun je wel de vertaling “out of your head” of, beter, “out of your mind” gebruiken, maar er zijn ook andere opties.

| Dat domme idee heb ik uit zijn hoofd gepraat. | I talked him out of that stupid idea. |
| Het lukte haar niet de gedachte uit haar hoofd te zetten. | She could not shake the thought. She could not push the thought from her mind. |
Waarom “out of your head” een nare false friend is
Nederlanders zeggen graag iets als *I learned that out of my head*. Voor een Engelstalige is dit onzin. Voor hen kan “out of your head” twee dingen betekenen: iets zat in je hoofd, en wordt er nu uitgezet, of iemand is “out of their head” (ook wel “off their head”, “not right in the head”), dan zijn ze gestoord, of stoned.
Het werkwoord “to learn” past voor beide deze gevallen niet, dus als je zegt *I learned that out of my head* dan moet de Engelstalige gaan verzinnen wat je bedoelt. In het beste geval denken ze dat je iets moedwillig uit je hoofd hebt gezet, in het slechtste geval denken za dat je stoned was. Dit is dus een belangrijke false friend om op te letten!
