Een goede vraag via de email: “hoe vertaal je “in zoverre” naar het Engels? De min-of-meer letterlijke vertaling is “insofar as“, maar die vind ik in Engelse zinnen toch vaak wat gekunsteld klinken. “To the extent that” klinkt meestal veel beter. Hieronder zoals altijd voorbeelden om het duidelijk te maken, met ook nog wat andere vertaalopties.

Deze vertalingen liever niet
Wat een onzinvertalingen toch weer op het internet. Ook ChatGPT doet het met “in zoverre” niet zo goed, hij begrijpt het Nederlandse gebruik ervan niet zo goed, geloof ik.
Deze vertalingen vind ik allemaal niet goed: Within those limits, in that regard, in that connection, however, in the sense that, accordingly, consequently. Soms snap ik wat de vertaler heeft proberen te doen, maar ik heb geen voorbeeld gevonden waar ik “to the extent that” niet beter vond passen.
