Huh? “Out of the box” in het Engels is toch gewoon “out of the box”. Nou, nee, er is een probleem. Net als “holding” en “sparren” is dit een term die we uit het Engels hebben gehaald, maar dan soms net op een andere manier gebruiken.
In het Engels kan “out of the box” betekenen dat iets meteen werkt zodra je het uit de verpakking haalt. Dit wordt ook overgankelijk gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld “this software works straight out of the box“. Je hoeft niets te installeren of configureren, het werkt meteen, zodra je het uit de figuurlijke doos haalt.
Een Engelstalige zal dus bij een “out-of-the-box solution” misschien denken aan een oplossing die je compleet inkoopt bij één of ander bedrijf, die het meteen doet. Dat is iets anders dan de Nederlandstalige bedoelt, die heeft het over een oplossing die helemaal anders is dan de gevestigde oplossingen, die bedacht is met “outside-of-the-box thinking”.

Australiërs hebben weer een andere betekenis
In Australië betekent “out of the box” dat iets supertof is. “That party was out of the box!” Australiërs met aardig wat buitenland-ervaring zullen echter wel op de hoogte zijn van de andere betekenissen, gok ik.
