Een vriendin van mij kwam met deze toffe suggestie voor mijn website. “Van uitstel komt afstel” heeft geen goede Engelse vertaling. Er zijn genoeg Engelse zegswijzen die uitdrukken dat het een goed idee is om snel te handelen: “there’s no time like the present“, of “strike while the iron is hot“, bijvoorbeeld. Maar een Engelse uitdrukking die aangeeft dat als je het niet meteen doet, je het misschien nooit doet, die bestaat niet.
Je kunt het idee natuurlijk wel gewoon in het Engels overbrengen. “If you don’t do it now, you might never do it.” Maar een echte uitdrukking bestaat dus niet.

Deze vertalingen liever niet
Waiting gives the devil time – deze staat online omdat hij bij het ondertitelen ooit gebruikt is, maar “waiting gives the devil time” is geen bestaande Engelse uitdrukking, en ik ben bang dat hij ook niet zo makkelijk begrepen zal worden.
