Als je “haantje de voorste” bent, dan ben je overal als eerste bij. De eerste in de rij, de eerste die een nieuw product uitprobeert, de eerste die haar vinger opsteekt in de klas. Hoe zeg je dat in het Engels?
Er is geen een-op-een vertaling naar het Engels voor “haantje-de-voorste”, hieronder een paar suggesties:

Deze vertalingen liever niet
“Cock of the walk” was vroeger de vertaling voor de oude betekenis van “haantje de voorste”, de machoste macho in de groep. Maar in het Nederlands is de vertaling verschoven naar “degene die eerst wil zijn” terwijl in het Engels de betekenis is verschoven naar “iemand die zich trots, dominant en arrogant gedraagt“. Was dus vroeger een goede vertaling, nu niet meer.
Je moet sowieso oppassen met de betekenis van “cock”, daar heb ik gisteren een stukje over geschreven.
Vertalers van het Nederlands naar het Engels zijn vaak native speakers die het Nederlands als tweede taal spreken. Bij dit soort uitdrukkingen gaat dat weleens mis omdat diegene een Nederlandse uitdrukking verkeerd interpreteert. Die verkeerde interpretatie komt dan in online woordenboeken terecht, want die halen hun vertalingen van het Internet.
Zo zie ik online “to be in front”, dat is een vertaler die “haantje de voorste” heeft verward met letterlijk vooraan staan. “To pioneer” is ook net even wat anders. “Head rooster” is geen bestaande uitdrukking in het Engels, ik zou het interpreteren als “de baas” maar ik vind het wel raar staan.
Scott Adams van het stripje Dilbert had een tijdje een figuurtje dat “topper” heette en altijd pochte dat hij het veel beter/erger/mooier/watdanook had als degene waar hij mee sprak. Ook een soort haantje-de-voorste, maar bij mijn weten is dit geen standaard-Engels geworden. De normale Engelse term is “one-upper“. Dat kan dus in sommige hele specifieke gevallen een goede vertaling zijn.
Wat betekent “haantje de voorste”?
Wat betekent haantje de voorste in het Nederlands eigenlijk? Altijd de eerste zijn of willen zijn, dus. Soms wordt het in neutrale zin gebruikt:
“Heb je weer een nieuwe smartphone? Jij bent ook altijd haantje-de-voorste met die dingen.”
Maar vaak hangt er een negatieve toon aan:
“Dat kind wil altijd haantje-de-voorste zijn. Ze kijkt niet om naar de anderen, als zij maar krijgt wat ze wil.”
Vroeger ging het om vechtersbazen, kwajongens die de baas waren van hun vriendenclub. Die betekenis zie je nu ook weleens, maar minder. Het is wel waar de uitdrukking vandaan komt, een haan is immers ook de baas over de kippenstal.
“Kijk hem, met zijn machogedrag. Haantje-de-voorste, altijd doen alsof hij je in elkaar gaat slaan.”

A haantje-de-voorste is a person who always wants to be first. It depends on the context, however, how that behaviour manifests, and how annoying or arrogant the behaviour is for other people.
My neighbour who is always haantje-de-voorste when it comes to technology is not annoying at all. They just like shiny new things. They are quick to embrace new technology, at the forefront, ahead of the curve, first in line.
A child who is haantje-de-voorste in class is the one who always sticks up her hand to answer a question, always wants to win when playing boardgames with other children. This is probably mildly annoying for the other people involved, but it is not all negative, and might be seen as a positive trait for the child’s future. This is the one I really can’t think of a good translation for. Is the child a high achiever, a front-runner, ahead of the game? Those translations seem too positive. Is the child insisting on being the star of the show, the centre of attention, the first in line? Those feel too negative.
If you thought of the translation cock of the walk, you wouldn’t be wrong, but you’d be more than 100 years out of step. Haantje de voorste used to refer to the leader of a gang, the head ruffian on the block. (Source.) In a Dutch dictionary from 1923, cock of the walk is given as a possible translation, but this no longer holds true. Haantje de voorste has changed its meaning to the above meaning of someone who likes being first. Cock of the walk has also changed its meaning; no longer a ruffian, but someone who is conceited and pompous, though still often the leader of the pack. (Source, source (OED)). It is language change in action, and in this case, these two similar expressions have moved apart in meaning.
(Cock of the walk is so called, by the way, because walk is an old word for a chicken-run, meaning there would be only one rooster, i.e. cock, in the walk, making him automatically the boss of all the hens, chicken-society being decidedly un-feminist in this regard. (Source (OED)) In Dutch, we can also call a kippenren a loop. Apparently in both languages we like telling our chickens they should either walk or run, but not both.)
