Deze heeft flink de rondes gedaan op de sociale media dus ik ben er nogal laat mee, maar toch, voor wie hem had gemist, deze Amerikaanse mevrouw was voor het eerst in Den Haag en vond het ge-wel-dig 🙂
Nederlandse ambassadeur in het VK Karel van Oosterom filmde het op zijn telefoon (neem ik aan, tenminste) en zette het op Twitter.
Omdat ik een beetje gek ben, heb ik het hele ding uitgeschreven, want ik weet dat het Engels voor sommigen te snel zal gaan.
First of all, we were in The Hague, which, I’ll be honest, I’m naive, I didn’t know what it was. I thought it was like West Point, like a building, there’s The Hague, where they have trials etc. It’s the most beautiful, beautiful town.
What is it?
It’s a town! It’s got winding streets, it’s got canals everywhere, it’s got houseboats, it’s charming. But what struck me the most about the whole thing was: I crossed the street from our charming little hotel, I walked into a flea market which was crowds of people buying ice cream, and churros, and they get all the stuff. Not one person, not a single person, had a phone out, or a phone in their hand as if they were going to use it later. I was… People were having ice cream and talking. I was like ‘Oh my God, look what’s happening here’.
Wait, a conversation, a real conversation?
Young girls, the age of which girls here they have the phone and everything’s about ‘click, click, click, click’
So we’re doing it wrong!
I call my mom, and I’m like ‘Oh my God they don’t have phones here.’ ‘Why not, they don’t have phones? They don’t know about phones?’ ‘No, they know about phones, they just choose not to use them.’
‘Wait, do we have to move to The Hague?’
It was unbelievable, I was so… And everybody’s on bikes.
Wait, so are we moving?
I think maybe.
Are we taking the show to The Hague?
Ik vind het trouwens niet zo dom dat Hoda Kotb (zo heet ze) niet wist dat Den Haag een stad was, maar dacht dat het Internationale Gerechtshof in een gebouw zat dat “The Hague” heet. We kunnen niet allemaal alles van elk land ter wereld afweten!
Ze noemt zelf als voorbeeld “I thought it was like West Point, I thought it was a building.” Als je mij gevraagd had wat “West Point” was, dan had ik gegokt dat het een stad was, dus dan ben ik precies even “dom” als die mevrouw.
