In het Nederlands zeg je weleens “wij-zij denken” als je verwijst naar het idee dat mensen vinden dat zij in een bepaalde groep horen en dat andere mensen daar niet bij (mogen) horen. Het duurdere woord is polarisatie. Je zegt in het Engels niet *we-they-thinking*, maar hoe vertaal je het dan wel?
In het Engels is de term die het dichtst in de buurt komt “an us vs them mentality“. Dat “vs” staat voor “versus”, dus letterlijk vertaald “een wij tegen zij mentaliteit”.
In het Engels spreekt men ook wel over “polarization“, maar je hebt ook “a divided society” of “social division“.
Een collegavertaler wees me via mijn contactformulier op het nieuwerwetse werkwoord “to other” – iemand als het ware in een “jij bent anders dan ik”hokje stoppen. Je hoort het vooral als “othering“.

Dit woord is de laatste jaren in de Engelstalige media erg populair. Hartelijk dank aan mijn collega voor de suggestie!
