Ik kreeg het volgende bericht op mijn contactpagina van Marcel: Hoi Heddwen, Hoe zeg ik in het Engels als ik graag ‘met mijn voeten in het bluswater sta’? Het betreft dan een beroepsmatige voorkeur, waarbij ik graag op de werkvloer sta als er problemen zijn.
Wat een leuke uitdrukking. Ik kende hem niet, en hij wordt ook niet zo vaak gebruikt, zie ik online. Maar Marcel heeft hem niet zelf verzonnen, hij bestaat echt. Het is meteen duidelijk wat er bedoeld wordt: niet van een afstandje toekijken als er problemen ontstaan, maar doen, erbij zijn en de problemen oplossen, ook als het zwaar is.
De beste vertaling naar het Engels is denk ik “to be on the front line“. Geen vergelijking met branden blussen, dus, maar met een legerveldslag: je bent bij de soldaten in de eerste linie.
