Een geweldige vraag weer in mijn inbox:
Kun je het Engelse woord ‘representative’ gebruiken als het Nederlandse woord representatief, in zinnen zoals ‘een representatief kantoorgebouw’, ‘er is geen kledingvoorschrift, maar zorg dat je er representatief uitziet’?
Het antwoord is nee, in het Engels moet je altijd vermelden waar iets representatief voor is.
Hier wat alternatieven:

Waarom niet “representative”?
Als je in het Engels tegen iemand zegt “make sure your clothing is representative” dan zal de Engelstalige zeggen “representative of what?”
Bovendien wordt in het Engels “representative” vaak in negatieve zin gebruikt. “This building is representative for the low incomes in this area.” “Your clothing is representative for how little you care about appearances.”
