De vertaling naar het Engels van eenduidig is niet eenduidig. (Kreun. Sorry.) Het Engels heeft wel een vertaling: “unequivocal“, maar die is erg formeel en wetenschappelijk, waardoor hij niet veel gebruikt wordt. Veel Engelstaligen zullen ook niet weten wat het betekent. (“Equivocal” betekent “op meerdere manieren uit te leggen”, dus “unequivocal” betekent dan “op slechts één manier uit te leggen”.)
Ook het Engelse broertje van “unequivocal”, “unambiguous” (= ondubbelzinnig), is vrij formeel. Maar de Engelse termen die wel voorkomen in normaal Engels, zoals “straightforward” ( = eenvoudig en duidelijk) of “clear” (= duidelijk) vatten de betekenis niet helemaal. Ik vind een wat langere formulering met “doesn’t leave room for interpretation” daarom vaak wel mooi.

one-sided – ik snap de logica van de vertaler, maar “a one-sided argument” is iets heel anders.
