Mijn neefje vroeg mij wat “dubbelop” in het Engels was en hij heeft geen idee hoeveel werk hij me daarmee gegeven heeft 😉 Dat er geen goede directe vertaling was, dat kon ik hem zo vertellen, maar hoe je het dan wél kunt vertalen? Daar had ik echt even een paar uur achter mijn laptop voor nodig.
“Dubbelop” is weer eens zo’n heerlijk flexibel Nederlands woord waar je per geval een andere Engelse vertaling voor moet kiezen.
Gaat het om “dubbelop” in negatieve zin, dat iets dubbel is terwijl dat eigenlijk niet zou hoeven? Dan heeft het Engels het woord “redundant” (= overbodig, overtollig). Dit is denk ik de vaakst voorkomende betekenis.
Maar het Nederlands heeft nog veel meer manieren om “dubbelop” te gebruiken. Mijn tabel is dan ook flink lang geworden. Hopelijk staat er een goede vertaling tussen, zo niet, laat het me weten in de comments!
