Een voorbeeld van een Nederlands woord waar de woordenboeken nog een beetje achterlopen (volgens mij). Ik ken het woord “behelpen” als “niet goed genoeg, waardoor je telkens andere oplossingen moet zoeken”. Een voltooid deelwoord, dus. “De situatie was behelpen.” De woordenboeken bespreken “zich behelpen” echter alleen als werkwoord: “je moet je maar behelpen met de middelen die er zijn”.
Dat werkwoord is makkelijk naar het Engels te vertalen, dat is “to make do“. Maar dat voltooid deelwoord, dat is veel lastiger naar het Engels te vertalen. In spreektaal vind ik de beste vertaling “it isn’t ideal”. Betekent hetzelfde als het Nederlandse “het is niet ideaal”. Betekent niet helemaal hetzelfde, maar is wel wat Engelstaligen in dit soort situaties zeggen, denk ik.
Andere opties die dichter bij de betekenis liggen zijn iets met het werkwoord “to improvise” of “inadequate“. Of je schrijft de zin anders op en maakt er toch iets met “to make do” van.
