Onder mijn trouwe lezers zijn ook een aantal Engelstaligen die Nederlands spreken, en die hebben vaak de beste opmerkingen.
“Top” can’t be used as an adjective in combination with “sport”. Instead, the adjective has to be formed with an extra, hyphenated noun – “top-flight sport”, “top-class sport”, “top-level sport”, “top-rank sport“. (….) “topsport” is precisely the kind of thing Dutch-speakers would simply expect to be identical in English – written as a single word, as in Dutch. I often see “topsport” or “top sport” in translations from English on the Internet – but the translations invariably appear on Dutch (.nl) sites….“
Mijn lezer heeft helemaal gelijk; “topsport” kan niet letterlijk naar het Engels vertaald worden. De opties die hij geeft (top-level sport etc.) zijn correct Engels, maar ze klinken wat gekunsteld omdat dat niet is wat Engelstaligen daadwerkelijk zeggen als ze het over de beste, hoogstbetaalde sporten hebben. In plaats daarvan zeggen we in het Engels “elite sports“. (“Sports” of “sport” kan allebei, met “s” is wat meer Brits, zonder “s” is wat meer Amerikaans.)
Nederlandstaligen zeggen erg vaak en graag “topsport” of “topsporter”, en de vertaling “elite sports” klopt niet altijd. Ik heb hieronder alle betekenissen proberen te vangen die ik ken.

Zoals hierboven wordt uitgelegd zou ik wegblijven bij alle vertalingen met het woordje “top”.
