Een nieuwsbrieflezer tipte me dat er een stukje stond in Trouw die me op het lijf geschreven was: in een korte column zocht taalkundige Peter-Arno Coppen tevergeefs naar een vertaling voor het woord “strijdbaar” als bijvoeglijk naamwoord. “Fighting spirit” komt het dichtste bij, was zijn conclusie, maar paste niet in de context waar hij het voor nodig had.
Daar moet ik natuurlijk meteen mijn licht over laten schijnen!
In zijn column geeft Coppen een prachtige, persoonlijke definitie voor strijdbaar. Hij zegt: “Ik heb het idee dat je vooral strijdbaar bent als je geconfronteerd met een flinke tegenwerking of aanval je niet beperkt tot afweer of uitzitten, maar juist de tegenaanval opzoekt. Je moet, met andere woorden, aangevallen worden om strijdbaar te kunnen zijn.”
Volgens mij heeft Coppen helemaal gelijk, zowel met zijn definitie als met zijn conclusie dat er geen goede vertaling is. In de boektitel die hij geeft (het tweede voorbeeld in de tabel hieronder) is “strijdbaar” onmogelijk goed te vertalen. Ofwel je kiest “resilient”, dat de lading niet helemaal dekt, of je kiest “fighting spirit”, maar dan verlies je in de titel aan informatie.
Ook in andere contexten is de vertaling lastig. Zoals altijd heb ik hieronder een overzicht gemaakt.
